It`s been a growers paradise

For the last two days I have been cutting and pitting plums....I have stewed them, I have made plum pies and this is my new creation, plum cheese cake,,,,I made 2......The first one I used uncooked plums and was quite surprised that it tasted good....

The second cheesecake I made I used the stewed fruit and omg i sneaked a taste and it`s devine....In future I will definitely be using the stewed version....

Starry was kind enough to share a plum cake recipe with me today so guess who`ll be busy baking again....lol....Tomorrow will be the last day for baking...3 days in a row now and I can honestly say i`m sick of it....Any left over fruit will be stewed and frozen for a later date....

The kids sure won`t be short on sweets for a while....

I am pleased with the amount of fruit we managed to get from two branches....Yes only two....They were packed full, so much so that the branches were getting awfully close to the ground....I covered them with netting to prevent the birds from eating them this year...Last year they had a field day and we were lucky to get a bucket full...Sorry birdies but it was our turn this year....

The vegie patch is also extremely productive....Cherry tomatoes galore and apple cucumbers growing quite well....I`ve never had much luck with the cucumbers but this year is a different story...

  1. hi mandy, i can't sleep. please tell me how often you feed your tomatoes. i haven't got any yet but some flowers. some are in pots and some are in the ground. the ones in the ground look healthier. any advice gladly accepted. i love tomatoes. the cheesecake looks too yummy. i could go some right now. ;)

  4. Hiya Fran....
Hope you did get some sleep eventually....
I`ve found that mine did much better in the ground this year also....
I`ve stopped feeding mine now but did give them some blood and bone plus some thrive....And they have thrived...Also too much water is no good for them....They just keep growing with little flowers...Someone actually told me to only water them once a week, that way they think they are dying and give off more flowers which produces the fruit....I didn`t do that though and i`m still getting a good crop....
    Hope this helps with yours....

Oh and the cheesecake was devoured by the tribe....lol

  6. Oh Mandy... you have done it again.Your family will be in seventh heaven! Wow!!

Did you stew the plums whole? I think cutting them up would be time consuming.

How sweet that Starry sent you a recipe. There is no doubt about the gift of friendship from our fellow bloggers..

  7. Hello Chez..I was starting to worry about you as I hadn`t seen you around today...Silly me....hahaha
The plums I did halve and remove the stone but after having done so many I was getting rather quick at it...
We certainly do have some wonderful bloggers amongst us which has formed into great frienships....I think this is mainly why we do blog....

  8. thanks for the advice Mandy, someone told me to water every day but, i've heard that too much water isn't good. i've come home today and the ones in the pots are wilting a bit. i've even put wetting agent in the soil hoping that helps. at least i've got flowers. maybe it's not too late. i didn't give them blood and bone but give them thrive about once a fortnight. i'll keep plodding along. 9. You've certainly got a productive garden Mandy. I'd be in piggy heaven with all those plums, and cheesecakes.... yuuummmm. Homemade cheesecake is my absolute favourite.

This time of the year in Darwin we do see some stone fruits in the supermarket and I have a short time being transported back to my childhood when my grandparents had orchards in Victoria. Peaches, nectarines, apricots, apples, cherries by the box full. I used to eat them until I had a belly ache or the runs, or both...

  10. Delicious fare......Plums fresh from the tree always taste better than "store" bought, not that I have ever grown them successfully.....have to eat around the grubs as always do not do the necessary maintenance. Cucumbers from the vines are such a summer treat.

Enjoy the cheesecakes.... and the New Year may it treat you well
